THE UNDER AGE SEX PHENOMENON
Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

As the risk of oversimplification of our emotions, what on earth can make Hon. Speaker of House of Representative, Federal Republic of Nigeria Dimeji Bankole cried openly on a national television. It got me unaware too until my niece said uncle you too are “Cr…” The same reaction I got recently at a gathering when I asked a youth leader that I respected so much, Oluseyi Oyebisi of Triple NGO & RVOY Unicef, he said “I felt it.”

It was during the courtesy visit made recently by their fellow Honourables Colleagues (The Nigerian Children Parliament) at the National Assembly on the issue of underage sex with children. Do we know or ignore the fact of this rampant social vices when uncle, father, neighbours rape underage girls from age 2 to 15, very absurd and irrating to humanity.

Sexual crime, especially defilement of underage children is skyrocketing in Nigeria now, recently a man Niyi Oseni was arrested in Suleja for defiling a four year- old girl in Niger State, another man called Abubakar 26-year old, lured an eight-year-old girl who was asked to hawk kolanut by her parent… you can read details of this in (The Nigerian Tribune, Tuesday 23 October 2007 Pg. 15).
My point here is that what are we doing on this issue of underage sex of child-girl child. It was argued in same quarters that reasons been given for the increase in the number of rape cases as; is that a person with HIV and AIDS who sleep with a virgin would be cleansed of the disease but to debunk this claim the victim is likely to be infected with whatever disease the rapist had in his body system. Another reason for the increase in rape cases was the young girls were being defiled for ritual purposes – innocent girl-child. Do the culprits think of the traumatic effect of their ungodly act, leaving on the victim with psychosomatic disorder, why the wickedness?

It was estimated that the children under age 14 are more than 40 million but primary school enrolment is only about 24 million, leaving more than 15 million on the streets something has to be done urgently, remember MDGs attainment by 2015, all are affected by this social vices if we don’t know. Recently Sexual Offences Bill sponsored by Senator Chris Anyanwu is a good step and speedy passage of the bill will go along way to curb this social menace.

We should all join the Nigerian Children Parliament (NCP) on the issue of underage sex because we do not know the next victim girl-child.. Parent should endeavour to look after their children because must of the victims were young girls. Governments, NGOs, Media and law enforcement agencies should do their utmost in this regard.

Voices of Nigerian Child? Someone has to listen to them because “DIS GENERATION” is taking Nigeria to next level, do you believe?

I want to thank my colleague Lady Jenny for this privilege, the Editor, The Nation on Sunday, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, thanks a million and “DIS-GENERATION” readers.

Reading through my pen same other time.

YOUTH FORUM -Progress Report

When Lady Jenny, my good, patriotic YOUNG Nigerian text me to ask of my interest to be guest columnist on her page for 2 weeks. I was like waoh! What a privilege to write about NYF progress report on the pages of newspaper known for truth in defense of freedom. The Nation...the Nigeria youth newspaper.”

Last week on this page you read about the introduction of NYF (Nigerian Youth E – Forum) initiated by Youngstars Foundation, since the E-Forum started, to date over 500 Nigerian youth have registered contributed to 6 out of point agent to transform Nigeria and 460 total post as at (February 18) on Topics for discussion.

We shall examine week 1 & 2 report of contributions. NYF began in earnest with the 2 core topics for week 1 which was power & Energy and Food security both received a total 101 contributions and week 2 Transport and wealth creation with 160 contributions respectively.

Nigerian youths raised concerns over power & Energy which includes Misappropriation of fund in the sector and increases the rate of unemployment among youth due to power instability. Their suggestions ranging from improved accountability and transparency management to progressive technocrats.

On Food security, the concern was by global definition, Nigeria is yet to attain food sufficiency despite availability of large available land. Their main suggestion that if consider will bring opportunities to young people, in Nigeria , is to translate the NYSC scheme into an agricultural and entrepreneurship program for young graduates wholly the land is green!

On transport and wealth creation, youth argued that an educational curriculum that promotes “white collar” job should be discouraged while on transport youths concerns was absence of civil society organization, vandalization of road networks by communication companies and over dependences on road transportation against other transport system.

Their suggestions respectively on transport and wealth creation were; general reform in the transport sector on monitoring and evaluation on road construction vis-à-vis standard organization of Nigeria , while on wealth creation, a youth bank or fund for building entrepreneurs with collateral free. NAPEP and SMEDAN among other wealth creation agencies should introduce a quality standard curriculum and conduct intergenerational catalogues for young people.

Indeed young citizens of Nigeria understand how best to contribute to national issues and effective youth development. At the end of the youth E-forum a stakeholder meeting involving youth from all states of Nigeria will convene in Abuja to continue the process of engagement.

Nigeria Youth Forum; situating young people in policy and good governance.
Someone has to listen to You!
